Hi Andrew, thank you for taking the time to read my article!
I definitely think my coding background has helped with my current degree. Coding teaches you to think analytically and to problem solve. This has definitely made me better at math which is helpful.
However I would argue that other education is the pre-requisite for learning to code. Many scientific disciplines encourage people to learn to code so they can more easily complete experiments and analyze data. I've heard that many Masters and PhD students teach themselves to code to help them complete their theses.
Regardless of which comes first, I think it's definitely useful to learn how to code in many disciplines. I specifically chose a geoscience degree because I knew that later on, my knowledge of learning how to code would help me to create programs to conduct research (so my first bit of education wouldn't be a waste).
Cheers!
